Picking your platform
With so many social media platforms out there, the temptation is to try to be everywhere and target everyone. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat and Linkedin all come with their own strengths and characteristics so please do some research into which audience is where. Keep your target customer in mind when shortlisting your social channels, for example, if your business is selling fashion accessories, a visual medium like Instagram usually performs well in this segment. Another thing to bear in mind is the types of content they favour and whether or not there are any rules.
Why oh why?
Having a purpose for your social media activity is important as it can help you keep on track and measure its success. Spend some time thinking about what you want to achieve from social media and list them out in order of importance. Try to be as specific as possible, for example; ‘I would like to grow the number of followers or ‘I would like to increase dinner reservations’, or even ‘I’d like to build my brand internationally’. Once you’ve set your reasons, you’re just steps away from setting realistic and achievable targets.
Plan your posts
There’s a saying in marketing circles that says ‘content is king’ and there’s a reason for it. What your followers read, watch or hear from you online can make a lasting impression so make sure you know what you want to say and when you want to say it. Developing a content calendar can help you map out different types of posts for different days and give you a ‘wider view’ of what you’re publishing. Be sure to tie in posts with things like product launches and/or special offers.
This one won’t come as too much of a surprise, but checking on how your posts are doing is a super important part of any social media plan. The good news is that all social media platforms provide pretty detailed analytics dashboards which makes accessing data a breeze. The not-so-good news is that knowing which metrics to track isn’t so simple. Whilst likes and views may be enough for your personal profiles, you may need to measure things like reach, engagements, tap outs etc.
Assign the right person
This one is about ensuring you are representing your best self on social media. You’ve literally got seconds to make an impression so make sure that what you post looks and sounds right! Writing and posting content that performs takes skill and flair so make sure you’ve assigned the task to the appropriate member of your team. Tip: You’re looking for someone with excellent written skills, a keen eye for design and attention to detail.
